Best Portable Basketball Hoop Adjustable Height
Portable Basketball Hoop Adjustable Height
So, where exactly can you find a portable basketball with adjustable height?
Basketball is a sport that is easy to understand but very difficult to master.
To become a great player, you must practice on a regular basis with high intensity.
That’s why you can’t just rely on being able to get to a gym to see if the courts are open.
Some of the best practice can be done at home, but it requires you to have a basketball hoop of your own.
If you have the means, you can install an entire basketball court with permanent hoops in your back yard, but most people aren’t able to do so.
That is why they require portable basketball hoops that can be easily assembled and moved around.
This allows you to put the hoop away when you are finished, or to bring it with you if you end up moving to a new location.
What makes many of these hoops even nicer is that they have adjustable heights.
This means that young children can start learning the game early on and that the height can be raised as they get older and stronger.
By purchasing a high-quality basketball hoop with adjustable height, you can save yourself money down the line, as these should last for years.
There are several things to look out for when buying a quality basketball hoop.
Consider these when you are shopping for your hoop, and make sure to go with the one that best fits your needs.

Simple Buyer’s Guide For Movable Hoops
The Makeup and Quality of the Base
A strong, durable base is one of the most important aspects of a mobile basketball hoop.
You have to remember that you can’t play with it the same you would with an in ground basketball hoop.
Without a high-quality base, you are taking a chance that the hoop will fall over frequently during gameplay.
The base should be able to withstand intense, high-impact games without wavering.
This is true whether there are people playing a strong post game or if you want to practice aggressive dunks.
How to Fill the Base
Many bases are filled with water for stability.
If this is your preferred filling, look for bases with a larger capacity – opt for a 42-gallon capacity over something smaller like 27.
However, you have other options for filling your base if you want to prevent annoying vibrations and to make sure that the hoop will not fall over.
Some people use sand to fill their base. This is highly effective because it is very heavy and provides a lot of stability.
Even more sturdy, however, are bricks.
If you can find a base that allows for brick insertion, you’ll be almost guaranteeing that the basket is never going to fall over, even under some of the most aggressive circumstances.
You should try to avoid putting any heavy objects on top of the base for extra stability.
These loose objects, such as rocks or external bricks can pose a safety hazard during gameplay.
If someone falls near the base, they could get injured on them, or the objects could end up flying out in the rare event that the base gets shaken.
Your best bet is to purchase a base that has enough internal capacity to hold the objects you need to keep it stable. This will keep the players safe and will make the basket look nicer.
Portability is Key
Although your basket should be able to hold plenty of weight to keep it sturdy, you also want to make sure that you get one that is easily moved.
You don’t want to find yourself trying to lift a basket with 42 gallons of sand in it, nor do you want to have to empty the base every time you need to move it!
Although your basketball hoop will most likely stay in one place most of the time, there are going to be situations that require you to move it.
Look for bases with strong wheels or casters that can be locked and unlocked.
Larger, thicker wheels will allow you to push over different types of terrain, meaning you can bring this from your driveway to your yard with ease, or even push it down the block to a friend’s house.
You want to find the right balance between movability and stability.
Although you want to be able to move your basket with relative ease, it shouldn’t be too simply to just push it!
That would mean that it won’t remain steady during a game.
The wheels should lock firmly when the hoop is in place, but they should be strong enough to let you move the hoop with minimal effort when they are unlocked.
The Backboard
The unfortunate part of many basketball hoops is that they do not include regulation backboards.
A professional NBA backboard is made of very thick glass and measures 72 inches across by 42 inches up and down.
The middle rectangle measures 24 by 18, respectively. While you might think glass is a terrible idea, the type of glass used by the NBA is incredibly strong and can withstand more force than most other substances.
Unfortunately, it is also extremely expensive.
For this reason, most portable basketball hoops do not offer backboards made to NBA standards.
While you can find them, they are often $1,000 more than other hoops, and they are quite a bit heavier.
If you are willing to spend the money on it, then it will be your best bet. But if you are on a budget, there are other options that will still allow you to improve your game daily.
Many portable hoops contain backboards made out of molded plastics or plastic composites. Acrylics are also common, but they are going to be more expensive – almost as expensive as a full glass backboard.
Tempered glass is another option near the top of the spectrum that will be more expensive but not as much as full glass.
In the middle price range for backboards, many hoops will offer polycarbonate.
While this material is quite strong and durable, it doesn’t provide as much of a rebound as glass or acrylic.
The trade-off is that it is an excellent choice for those who play a hard, aggressive game, as it can withstand quite a bit of impact.
Just know that the response will be noticeably different than on a professional backboard.
Ultimately, the type of backboard you get will come down to your budget. The less you spend, the weaker rebound you will get from the backboard.
However, most backboards will be strong enough to withstand years of play, and cheaper ones will be lighter, making them ideal for younger players who are just learning the game.
The Rim
Depending on your style of play, you might consider different types of rims.
The basic rim is simply a ring of steel that measures 5/8 of an inch. It has hooks for the net and no springs attached.
This is serviceable for players who don’t plan on dunking or playing too aggressively.
The more expensive Heavy-Duty rim has 2 types – one with springs showing and one with springs covered.
The springs allow for a breakaway system in which the rim will drop down when the ball is dunked.
This prevents the rim from breaking off of the backboard.
The rim with covered springs is a bit stronger than the one with exposed springs, making it ideal for strong, aggressive players who plan on dunking frequently.
The Cost
As we mentioned, the hoop that you choose is likely to come down to what you can afford.
Fortunately, there are a wide range of prices among movable basketball hoops, and you should be able to find something that suits you well no matter what your budget is.
The cheapest basketball hoops can be found for under $200.
These are usually best for younger players, as they provide smaller bases and backboards, and might not hold up to the intense playing style of older, stronger ballers.
If you are opting to save money and go for a cheaper hoop, be sure to test out the functions before buying.
Some of them can be difficult to adjust and might not be strong enough.
There are many hoops available in the $200-500 range, and they will be sturdier and easier to use than the lower-tier hoops.
The materials will be stronger, but they won’t quite be as stable or durable as a professional set up.
Finally, the highest quality portable basketball hoops can sell for over $1,000.
If you have the means, these are the best ones that money can buy, and will likely last a very long time without needing any maintenance or suffering from degradation.
These will have regulation backboards and rims as required by the NBA and will provide the most dynamic and responsive playing experience.
Keep in mind that these materials will be heavier, making these hoops more difficult to move around if you need to get them out of the way.
On these, you are paying more for the quality of the materials than you are for the convenience of portability.

I definitely agree about the usefulness of adjustable height, it’s so necessary. To an extent, it can also make or break it in terms of whether the kid ends up really enjoying basketball or not. So, with that in mind, personally, I think that it’s much more thoughtful to get some of these instead of installing a permanent one (which would definitely be a fine option but if you have kids, not so much).
I really liked the first recommendation on your list. Loved the price. Loved that it is weather-resistant. And, of course, the adjustable height aspect. Thank you!
Cheers.

You’re very welcome, glad I could help.

I love basketball and I love watching basketball games. Playing it is indeed not that easy. I have played a few games in my youth and there were so many rules to pay attention to 😉 but I think it’s a good idea to have a hoop in the back yard though, for further practice. I have a friend who’s been playing basketball for decades, he’s really good at it and I know he’d love to find a basketball hoop in my garden.
I like the Spalding portable basketball hoop, it looks very sturdy. Is this a pretty solid pick in your opinion?
James E.
Hi Christine,
Yeah the Spalding portable basketball hoop is a good pick so you’d be getting your money’s worth for sure. Thanks for stopping by to comment.

I had no idea there were so many `options available for home basketball hoops! Years ago, we invested in outside equipment for our children, including a movable hoop set. I wish I had this information at that time! It cost quite a bit, but was not nearly so nice as some of those you showcased.
I think it’s time for me to get a new one, I appreciate you providing these options!
James E.
Sure no problem, happy to help.

I enjoy basketball a lot, and I’ve only started learning how to play. Having an adjustable hoop is certainly helpful in a lot of ways, especially since I’m not the tallest person out here. Thanks for some of the recommendations, I think I know what to get when I’m ready to upgrade my equipment.
James E.
Hi there,
I’m glad you enjoyed the post, I know everyone isn’t tall enough to dunk on a regular basketball hoop so I wanted to make sure I provided some suitable options for people of various heights.
